sEMG - neuromuscular transmission study:

  • Superficial electromyography, is increasingly used during rehabilitation and in sports medicine. It is newer, more modern, and less invasive in nature than traditional needle electromyography. Surface electromyography is performed using electrodes that are placed on the skin, and the results are read on a computer screen.
  •  It is a neuromuscular transmission test that evaluates neuromuscular conduction. Superficial electromyography, is increasingly used during rehabilitation and in sports medicine. It is newer, more modern and less invasive in nature than traditional needle electromyography.
  • Surface electromyography is performed with electrodes that are placed on the skin, and the results are read on a computer screen. It is a completely painless examination. The EMG makes it possible to assess the symmetry of the potentials. Contrary to the fears of some patients, an EMG test performed by this method, is reliable and the results can be relied upon.

 Indications for electromyography are conditions such as:

  •  muscle weakness: single or whole group,
  • differentiation of neurogenic from myogenic diseases, central paresis and psychogenic paresis,
  • differentiation of causes of nerve pain - root and neck syndromes and lumbosacral syndromes (shoulder sciatica, sciatica),
  • compression syndromes when there is nerve damage, e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome, tarsal tunnel syndrome,
  • demonstration of conduction disturbances in myasthenic syndromes,
  • confirmation of damage to multiple nerves - polyneuropathy,
  • control after peripheral nerve damage,
  • suspicion of congenital diseases - muscular dystrophy,
  • amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,
  • spinal muscular atrophy.

 

Contraindications for electromyography are:

  • having an implanted pacemaker and metal elements in the heart or in the part of the body, while being examined.
